Music Agency Creates ‘Panic Button’ For Its Time-Strapped Clients

This article is more than 4 years old.

Fifteen years ago, office supply chain Staples aired a popular series of TV spots where it introduced the “Easy Button.” Each one ended with a voice over asking, “Wouldn’t it be nice if there was an easy button for life? Now there’s one for your business. Staples. That was easy.”

The line, memorialized in a Super Bowl spot (and, later, with actual Easy Buttons sold at Staples locations) had its own pop-culture moment. When Amazon launched its short-lived dash buttons (launched in 2015 and retired earlier this year), many hailed them as an in-real-life version of Staples’ Easy Button.

This week, L.A.-based music company Score a Score is getting in on the “here’s a button to make your life better” action. The company, founded by Forbes 30 Under 30 Music alum Jordan Passman, sent so-called “Presto!” buttons to dozens of its clients.

“Commissioner Gordon had the Bat phone. Bank tellers have panic buttons. Every security guard in every horror movie ever made has that big red button they hit when the aliens breach the perimeter fence,” Passman says.

The button gives Score a Score clients — among them, producers and creatives in the advertising and film trailer industries — direct access to the music company.

“It’s their own code red button,” Passman continues. “It’s a wireless device that guarantees to trigger a call, text or email from a member of the Score a Score team instantly, anytime, anywhere.”

Passman says the idea, designed to coincide with the company’s tenth anniversary, was inspired by the fact that in the music-for-picture licensing industry, timing (and time) is everything. “We’ve heard for years that our clients have come to rely on our speed and availability, but even so, that wasn’t enough. With Presto!, we know for a fact that, with the push of a button, we’re the easiest music company to contact in the world,” he says.

Each button is programmed with a client’s contact information and, once pressed, sends an “SOS” email to the appropriate Score a Score team member. The client, in turn, gets a call, text, or email back from the Score a Score team immediately.

Are the buttons necessary, or even the most practical way for clients and agencies to communicate? Of course not. But, it’s a fun marketing play that doubles down on a core brand attribute (“We’re quick! We’re always here for you!”) to help keep the music company top of mind. The buttons will probably stick around (pun intended) on clients’ desks for a while due to their sheer novelty, and as any marketer knows, being visible in front of your clients on a daily basis is half the battle.

While you can’t get a button unless you’re a client, you can enjoy this fun short film Score a Score put together to celebrate the role buttons play in our lives.
