The holiday season is finally upon us, and with it comes everyone's favorite songs. From classics like "Tiny Christmas Ham" and "Soot-Beard's Belly" to more modern additions to the holiday canon like "Shopping" and "Phones Are Family" there is truly no better time of year to crank the dial on your AM radio and give it a spin. I know it's controversial, but I have to admit that my personal favorite is Shrimp Brinkley's 1952 single "Donner Party Christmas."

So, without further ado, here is newsletter #23. I think Shrimp said it best when he sang that unforgettable couplet "News, Recent Work, Trends/References, Q&A. Those are all my favorite sections of a newsletter I'd say!"

Recent Work

The trailer everyone is talking about, the official start of Marvel's Phase 4 of the MCU, the first look at Black Widow features a unique and original track from SAS-exclusive artist Jeremy Bullock AKA JNUARY, off of his sophomore trailer album, Emergence. The backbone of the cue is a haunting, signature synth motif that is continually pushed to new heights throughout the spot, culminating in an epic and action-packed finale.

Tubi, the streaming service, came to us looking for a few tracks for their star-studded promo campaign featuring celebs in mock therapy sessions. For this spot, featuring Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls, they needed a cool, modern pop song to set the scene and this track by composer Pejman Roozbeh fit like a glove.

Trends/References

Calvin Markus - Cinder - This track was recently used in the trailer for Luce and is a great example of how organic and digital sound design can be blended to create a tense and unexpected sound, with the focus slipping seamlessly back and forth. This cue has a driving intensity with a steady ticking  that amps up the suspense and moves the action on screen.

Lady Bri - Do What I Do - This fun, confident, funky track was featured in this LL Bean spot because it makes folks feel good and makes stuff look cool. The brass and the vocal processing give it a bit of a throw-back vibe but the modern, polished production keeps it sounding large and exciting. Something to avoid - that piano loop at the beginning must be available for free somewhere and we're about at capacity over here with tracks built on it.

Carl Orff - Gassenhauer  - This sparse, light, playful track is built entirely with percussion and features a dynamic build and triumphant conclusion. The marimba is the key player here, percolating and dancing about before being joined by the timpani and eventually the rest of the percussion section. We've been getting this request for years and would some more of these warm, percussive pieces.

This cue from the backend of the trailer for Jackie begins with a  subtle and elegant build, almost like the sound of an orchestra tuning up, but as the layers of vocals and percussion are added it creates a driving and undeniably emotional cue that feels both urgent and anticipatory. Its dynamic performances give it a human feel that is as haunting as it is beautiful.

Q&A

"I have a track I'm working on that could use a good vocalist, do you know any?" OR "I'd like to collaborate with a hip-hop producer to remix one of my tracks, anyone come to mind?"

We love when our composers collaborate with each other and, given our large roster of talent,  can often help pair up artists with complementary skills. This can be a great way to get some tracks in the catalog in a particular style you may have less experience producing. Just come to us and outline what you're looking for and what you plan to bring to the table and we'll put some feelers out to find a good match. After that, we'll make the introduction and get out of the way so you can do what you do best.

Typically for true collaborations (i.e. not simply hiring a vocalist or player) we assume a 50/50 split of the composers' share of license fees, meaning if a track places for $10k, SAS would get $5k and each composer would get $2500. Any alternate splits can be decided between the two composers, just please notify us of the desired split so we can facilitate payment should the track license. If it's easier for one composer to collect and pay out the other, that's fine as well, we'll just need both parties to confirm whatever arrangement we land on.

All sorts of combinations are possible here, from simply finding the right voice to drop on an already written track to building a rock/orchestral hybrid trailer cue together from the ground up where one composer focuses on the rock, the other on the orchestra. Get creative, we think this could be an excellent opportunity to expand your repertoire, your network and your skillset!

So what's your favorite holiday song? And how many times do you want to hear it during a single trip to Target? Personally I do all my shopping online so I keep a holiday playlist absolutely blasting through the speakers in my house while I browse. I don't know what happened to my wife's holiday spirit but she really seems to hate this.

Happy Scoring everybody!
