2020. A new decade begins, and if any of the sci-fi movies I've seen are any indication, it's gonna be a rough one. Soylent Green, Metropolis, the future in Terminator, A Boy and his Dog -  all set in the 2020s, all painting a pretty bleak pic of what's to come.

The good news is that if you watch all of those films the one institution that perseveres, the one thing that mankind refuses to give up against all odds is, you guessed it, the newsletter. There will always be News, there will always Recent Work, there will always be Trends/References, and of course, you can always count on As for your Qs. Newsletter #23 - let's do this.

News

This month the Guild of Music Supervisors honored our supervision team, Marchese Taylor, Jake Weinreb, and Jordan Passman, with a nomination for "Best Music Supervision in a Docuseries" for their incredible work on the Amazon Prime series Free Meek.

Having watched the team sweat it out for months, I'm so proud to see their hard work recognized in this way and am looking forward to February 6th when the winner will be announced at the 10th Annual Guild of Music Supervisors Awards.

Recent Work

The trailer for the highly anticipated sequel to John Krasinski's A Quiet PlaceA Quiet Place: Part II, features a haunting cue from JNUARY (AKA Jeremy Bullock) that was created for the space-themed sound design collection, The Signature Series Vol. 2: S P A C E.

If you caught the Golden Globes last month, you may have seen this hilarious AT&T spot which features a beautiful piece by Daniel Ciurlizza off of one our Trailer Mixtapes. Just goes to show you never really know where a track might end up!

Trends/References

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross - Absent Friends and Old Ghosts - This dreamy, ethereal cue from the score to HBO's new Watchmen series is a digital soundscape largely built on atmospheric sound design but the few melodic contributors build to create an intriguing but hopeless feeling that makes for a great first act to a trailer.

Geowulf - Saltwater is a laid-back, feel-good track with a steady beat and layered, vintage tones. It's peppered with unique, signature flourishes but still feels effortless and relaxing, even as the track continues to evolve throughout. Vocals or vocalese can work well here but please send an instrumental as well if you decide to go that route.

José González - Step Out - This inspirational, choir-backed post-rock song from the soundtrack to the Secret Life of Walter Mitty has a hopeful, emotional build and slick, modern production that makes it feel both very human and larger-than-life at the same time. Full disclosure - I can't remember if I've used this one before, but it keeps coming up so I'm gonna keep it on your radar!

Duke Ellington - Caravan - Don't take this one quite as literally as the others but we recently had a client send  this to us to try and track down a cue with a bit of "dark irony" to it. The emotional tone of the track is right but a more polished, modern production aesthetic works better, and some of the improvisational, solo elements should probably be toned down so as to not be too distracting. Think FX Network promos - looking for dark, curious and classic.

Q&A

"I'm a new composer who just signed on with SAS. What kind of music are you looking for?"

Hey New Guy, welcome to the roster!

Let me start by saying you're doing the right thing reaching out and making contact with the team here. We're always happy to strategize and provide insight and guidance to maximize your efforts and make the most out of our partnership. Never hesitate to ask questions or set up a call to discuss.

As you can see from the eclectic mix of references in the above section, there's no simple answer for the type of music we need. We have a wide variety of clients', who represent a wide variety of brands, who have a wide variety of needs. So with that in mind, the best advice I can give is to pay attention to what's on your television and take note of any styles that seem like they play to your strengths.

What looks "easy" for you to make that might be harder for someone without your unique set of talents, experiences, and passions? What "sounds like something you would write?" Of course we encourage you to diversify, expand your repertoire, and flex your versatility, but especially when you're just starting out, load us up with the stuff that makes you you. Odds are good that clients will respond to the authenticity and it will also help us learn your strengths so we can best leverage them in the future.
