30 days has September, April, June, and November, all the rest have 31 including February. Today is the last day of a very average lengthed month and that means the Newsletter is upon us. As you know, much like the wicked curse of lycanthropy, at the end of each calendar month the cravings begin. Small and subtle at first but soon they grow in intensity, becoming an unquenchable thirst, an all-consuming desire for fresh News, Recent Work, Trends/References, and As for Qs.  Don't act so repulsed! Be honest with yourself for a moment and admit it - you've felt the cravings, too... Ahwooooooo!

Look there's no good onomatopoeia for a werewolf howl, I have to work with the tools I've been given by the English language. Whatever, this is Newsletter #49 Ahwooooo!

If you're receiving this newsletter, you probably also received a brief from back in January for an REI spot looking for a hybrid of folk/acoustic and electronic elements. We thought it might be fun to share the winning tracks from that brief, one from Ygor Ghensev and the other from BLVKSHP (AKA Dylan Charbeneau). Thanks so much to all who submitted!

Trends/References

Kendrick Lamar - Humble

Kendrick Lamar - Humble - I was surprised to find that we had not yet featured this track but here it is. The beat is simple and infectious, with very few elements contributing beyond the percussion, 808 bass and aggressive piano. Despite its simplicity, or perhaps because of it, the track has energy, confidence and swagger in spades.

SYML - Where's My Love

SYML - Where's My Love - This somber, simple folk track from solo artist SYML has been making the rounds on TikTok recently. The bedrock of the track is of course the stark acoustic guitar but it's in the sweetening that the piece comes to life with warm strings, melodic piano, layered vocals and filtered percussion.

Henry Mancini Orchestra - Something for Cat

Henry Mancini Orchestra - Something for Cat - This bombastic symphony jazz track from legendary film composer and Academy Award winner Henry Mancini feels playful and flirty, with a latin influence and lots of lengthy soloing. Arrangements like this can often be trickier to synthesize believably so take special care working samples and sprinkle in some live performance whenever possible.

Songs with lyrics - This is very general, but we've been getting requests for  tracks that feature lyrics and are looking to expand that side of our catalog. Interestingly a lead vocal can sometimes even help to sell the instrumental version of a track! A strong vocal performance is a must so if you don't fancy yourself a singer this may not be the best avenue to explore but if you're interested, check out the Q&A section for some lyrical theme ideas.

Q&A

Hey I heard you were looking for lyrical songs, what are some good sync-friendly themes or concepts I can write around?

As a general rule of thumb the two key words are "positive," and "relatable." With that in mind, here is a list of some themes that we see popping up a lot in our requests for lyrical content:

Friendship / Freedom / Fun / Human Kindness / United / Togetherness / Heroes / I'm Back/Returning/Welcome (Comeback Songs) / Getting Back / Keep Moving / Brand New Day / Happy Again / In This Together / We’ll Figure It Out / Lean On Me / Change the World / I Got Your Back / Dreams / Generic Sweet/Candy/Sugar / Family / Excitement / Life / Journey / Living in the Moment / Loving Life / Life is Great / Thank You / Unconditional Love / Human Connection / Gratitude / The Human Heart / Appreciation / Better Together / Giving Back / Hope / Gonna Be Ok / Joy / It's a Beautiful Life / Being special the way you are / Being unique / Helping Hand / Reassurance / Carry Each Other / Loving Acceptance of Others / Memories / The Story of life / Helping Each other / Lifting Up / Rising Up / Traveling

Does that help!?
