February has the most holidays out of any other month. I haven't done any research on this and the claim feels extremely dubious but just off the top of my head we got Groundhog's Day, we got Valentine's Day, we got President's Day, Superbowl Sunday, Mardi Gras, Ash Wednesday, and now to top it all off we have a Leap Day in 2020!

Are all of these days holidays? Look, I'm not a calendar maker, okay? I make newsletters, and you're just at the beginning of my latest masterpiece. When this thing is done, we're gonna have four new holidays to celebrate: News Day, Recent Work Day, Trendsday (rhymes with Wednesday, but spelled better), and Q Ann Day.

News

The news this month is SAS HQ has a new address and the west coast team has some new digs in Koreatown! After almost 3 years at our previous spot, we were looking for a change of scenery and are thrilled with our new home base.

As a member of the exclusive SAS-East team, my only experience with the new space so far is when I video chat in to the new and improved conference room but I hear it only gets cooler from there.

Recent Work

This trailer for Amazon's Blow the Man Down features a dark, elegant cue from composer Joni Fuller's debut SAS trailer album. Not only was this track written and produced by Joni but she also performed and recorded all of the strings herself!

The always hilarious Jenny Slate stars in this Verizon spot with a quirky, plucky, orchestral score by composer Louis Weeks.

Trends/References

Lemaitre - Cut to Black - An upbeat, fun, and feel-good track from the Norwegian Indie-electronic duo, Lemaitre, you may have heard this track a few years ago as the backdrop to millions of "Facebook Friends Day" videos. The catchy, percolating piano dances on top of the four on the floor beat to create a lively and energetic track with a subtle hint of sweetness.

A recent trend we've been noticing in trailers are these sort of quirky, slightly-haunting-but-in-an-ironic-way, a capella cues. You can hear some examples of it in this cue from the Bombshell trailer and this one from the Vivarium Trailer. A few non-vocal elements are fine but generally you'll want to keep it pretty sparse.

Philip Glass - Floe - This frenetic, hybrid of brass, woodwinds and synthesizers has an exciting energy that feels like a time-lapsed video looks. It's almost cacophonous but  keeps the wheels on just enough to carry some emotional weight and feel satisfying rather than outright alienating - a common pitfall of the avant garde.

Bad Bunny - Mia  - As always, when a track cracks the top 10 and becomes an international sensation, our clients take notice, and this track by Puerto Rican singer, Bad Bunny ft. Canadian rapper, Drake, helps to explain the influx of "latin-influenced" pop requests we've been getting lately. If your track has vocals, please be sure to include an instrumental as well.

Q&A

"What is up with the newsletter archive? How can I go back and see previous newsletters all in one place?"

We had some technical difficulties following our newslettering platform transition a few months ago and the archive has been broken ever since. But fret not! I have just updated the archive with a fresh new coat of paint and included all previous newsletters.

I'd say it's worth re-reading each and every one of them every day if you want to stay on top of your game so now you can do that by going into your favorite internet browsing application and typing "scoreascore.com/newsletter" or just clicking that link.

"How do I update my Artist page on your catalog to adjust my name or include a picture of me?"

We don't currently have a way for you to log into a back end to our site to make changes like these but if you would like us do it for you please just email us (music@scoreascore.com) with the necessary assets and we'll take it from there.

All of these traditional holiday feasts have really taken a toll on my body. The George Washington themed President's Day feast especially did a number on me - how am I supposed to eat all of his favorite foods in one meal? And what even is fish muddle? Actually don't tell me, I want to keep the magic of the holiday alive.

Happy Scoring everybody!
